Our Lady of the Flowers (1968) by Jean Genet – Sold by Crappy Old Books
Step into the lurid, lyrical underworld of Parisian vice with Our Lady of the Flowers, Jean Genet’s incendiary debut novel—here in its unapologetically seedy 1968 Panther Books edition. Written in prison on stolen paper and first published in 1943, this fever-dream of pimps, drag queens, lovers, and betrayals is less a novel and more a sensual, surreal confessional—part prayer, part provocation.
Genet transforms the gutters and backrooms of Montmartre into a mythic stage, where beauty and brutality dance in the shadows. With characters like the doomed Divine and the elusive Darling, Our Lady of the Flowers blurs the lines between saint and sinner, art and obscenity, longing and survival. Banned, revered, and endlessly discussed, it remains a literary grenade thrown into the polite parlours of respectability.
Condition: Slightly warped, faint smell of Gauloises and regret, but still burns with Genet’s defiant brilliance. This book has seen things. It probably is one of the things.
Crappy Old Books – For readers who like their classics with a bit of scandal and smudged eyeliner.
Slightly snarled in so many ways, but otherwise in good condition. Looks like it has suffered water damage, but that has left only staining. A few snags have been taken out of it here and there, but nothing serious.
